american dj & producer eric estornel aka maceo plex is set to relaunch his old moniker called mariel ito in 2018. the mysterious alias was active during the early 2000s and flourished from estornel’s experimentation on electro sounds before he would become known worldwide as maceo plex. he delivered a bunch of releases under this moniker during 2005 and 2006 including an ep on modern love and an album on scsi-av, to name a few. estornel will come back with a first mariel ito ep in 12 years. this new single titled 2e komst will land on january 26th on his fresh imprint lone romantic, that he launched with the recent maceo plex lp solar last summer. the ep brings two new tracks sintex49 and dmode90 that illustrates the electro edge of his sound with the recognizable obscure synths and electrifying samples of his productions. all tracks written & produced by eric estornel

slow town s 17th release from melbournes luis cl is an ode to analogue jams. the cran town ep shows what luis cl (one half of the zanzibar chanel duo and co-founder of ruff records) is know for: dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some detroit influences. the three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.

first ever vinyl remastered reissue of this sought-after synth-pop /cosmic disco / funk / boogie album from 1983! lots of vocoder, analogue synths & keyboards, heavy drum machines, spacey vocals, bossa / brazilian touches, cosmic effects. the rah band was the brainchild of legendary english producer & arranger richard hewson. they debuted in 1977 with the cosmic glam hit the crunch, on which richard, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, played all the instruments himself. in 1983, he released going up the second rah band album, where he also played most of the instruments himself, helped by several drummers, a brass section and the sweet vocals of his wife liz hewson. including massive club classics like messages from the stars, perfumed garden and more.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

canada’s mathew jonson has quite the impressive career under his belt having co-founded the revered wagon repair label and heading up itiswhatitis recordings as well as performing under his own name and various guises such as cobblestone jazz, the modern deep left quarted, and his new project units & measurements alongside hreno and the mole. here we see the synth aficionado joining forces with visionquest’s very own ryan crosson, who’s carved out an equally impressive career to date and will soon drop his second long player alongside cesar merveille focused on intricately musicality and an intriguing approach to electronic music via the visionquest imprint.
as you’d expect from such a pairing this collaboration packs a bunch, opening with ‘tempelhof’ named after the now defunct airport in berlin and laid out over thirteen minutes of gradually unfolding and retracting acid swells, resonant synth whirrs, mind bending arpeggios and dynamic, baroquely evolving rhythms.
